Events and Activities in Agronômica: What to Do in Florianópolis’ Cultural Neighborhood

Agronômica is Florianópolis’ most valued neighborhood—and one of the most culturally dense. In less than 1 km², the neighborhood concentrates Santa Catarina’s largest cultural complex, a theater with a stage for national productions, two museums, a film archive, art school, annual festivals, and a waterfront that functions as a permanent public performance space. Much of the programming is free.

This guide presents what the neighborhood offers—from one-off events to everyday facilities—for those living or considering moving to Agronômica.

The CIC: the cultural asset that defines the neighborhood

The Integrated Center of Culture (CIC), at Avenida Governador Irineu Bornhausen, 5600, is Santa Catarina’s largest cultural complex and the neighborhood’s main facility. Managed by the Catarinense Foundation of Culture (FCC), the CIC brings together on a single campus facilities that, in other Florianópolis neighborhoods, simply do not exist.

Living 5 minutes on foot from the CIC is different from living near an ordinary cultural center. The CIC has continuous programming—not just one-off events—and a significant portion is accessible at no cost.

Ademir Rosa Theater

The Ademir Rosa Theater is the main performance stage in southern Santa Catarina. Programming ranges from national and local theatrical productions to shows, dance performances, and children’s entertainment. The theater is the venue where large touring national productions stop when they come to Florianópolis—and where Agronômica residents can attend without having to cross the city.

The theater’s capacity accommodates medium and large-scale productions. Programming is published by the FCC and the Florianópolis Cultural Foundation—it’s worth keeping up with the quarterly calendar.

Santa Catarina Museum of Art (MASC)

The MASC is Santa Catarina’s leading museum of visual arts. Its collection includes works by Catarinense and Brazilian artists from different periods, with temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Admission is usually free or symbolic.

For families with children, MASC functions as a cultural education hub minutes from home. For adults, it’s the venue where exhibitions of state and regional significance happen—without traveling to Downtown.

Museum of Image and Sound (MIS)

The MIS at the CIC concentrates Santa Catarina’s audiovisual and photographic collection, with exhibitions and events related to the State’s visual memory. More specialized programming, aimed at communications and culture professionals, but open to the general public.

Film Archive and Film Club

The CIC’s film archive is one of Florianópolis’ few spaces dedicated to art cinema and alternative film. The Film Club has periodic sessions with curation that goes beyond the commercial circuit—national films, award-winning international productions, director retrospectives.

For those who appreciate cinema beyond blockbusters, it’s the only venue of its kind in the neighborhood—and one of the few in the city.

Library, art school, and studios

The CIC also houses a library with a public collection, an art school with courses in various mediums (dance, music, visual arts, theater), and studios for artist residents. The art school has openings for adults and children—a cultural education service that neighborhood residents access at subsidized rates or free.

Annual festivals at the CIC

FAM—Multimedia Art Festival

FAM is one of the most significant multimedia art festivals in southern Brazil. It brings together installations, performances, digital art, and experimental production in mediums that blend technology and artistic expression. The festival attracts artists from across the country and has programming open to the public, with free and paid events.

For Agronômica residents, FAM is the festival that happens literally next door—no traffic, no paid parking, no half-hour commute.

Florianópolis International Children’s Film Festival

The Florianópolis International Children’s Film Festival is based at the CIC and is aimed at children and families. It brings together international and national shorts and features focused on children’s and youth production. It’s one of the events that sets Agronômica apart for families—the neighborhood’s cultural calendar includes programming specifically designed for children, within walking distance.

The waterfront as permanent activity

The Avenida Beira-Mar Norte is not just a thoroughfare—it’s the neighborhood’s most-used public space, every day.

What happens on the waterfront

  • Running and walking: the flat layout of the bikeway/sidewalk along the waterfront attracts runners and walkers at all hours, including before 7 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • Cycling: the bikeway integrated into Beira-Mar Norte connects Agronômica to Downtown (to the south) and Trindade (to the north). It’s used both as a thoroughfare and as a training route
  • Outdoor gym: weight training and calisthenics equipment along the route, free and open to public use
  • Playground: children’s area integrated into the waterfront, one of the focal points for families with children on weekends
  • Kiosks and stands: food and beverage services along the waterfront, with outdoor seating

The waterfront has no fixed hours. It’s a public facility with permanent access—meaning any weekday, at 6 a.m. or at 7 p.m. after work, there’s activity happening.

Governador Celso Ramos Plaza

The Governador Celso Ramos Plaza is the neighborhood’s inner hub—the gathering point for residents who aren’t at the waterfront. With shade, landscaping, and benches, the plaza functions as a rest area, meeting space, and passage between residential areas and service zones.

Smaller events—craft fairs, community activities, small celebrations—happen sporadically at the plaza. It doesn’t have fixed programming like the CIC, but it’s the neighborhood’s space for spontaneous gathering.

Children’s City Complex at Agronômica

The Children’s City Complex is a recreational and educational space aimed at children, complementary to the CIC’s art school. For families with young children, it’s another public facility accessible within the neighborhood—without traveling to other parts of the city.

What the City of Culture will add to the neighborhood’s agenda

The City of Culture project—which will transform the 173,000 m² of the old Agronômica Penitentiary Complex into a hub for culture, leisure, sports, and tourism—is still in the planning and construction phases. Demolition of the old structures began in December 2025 (Source: ND+), and construction is planned for 2026.

Once operational, the City of Culture will substantially expand the neighborhood’s agenda. A culture and leisure hub of this scale is likely to bring new festivals, spaces for outdoor events, sports facilities, and regular programming—all within the neighborhood’s boundaries.

For current residents, it’s the prospect of having a state-scale cultural park steps from home. For those evaluating a purchase: the neighborhood’s agenda is already the city’s densest; with the City of Culture, the gap compared to other central neighborhoods will widen.

What Agronômica doesn’t have: being honest about nightlife

Agronômica is a quiet neighborhood at night. The CIC has sporadic evening programming (performances at Ademir Rosa Theater, Film Club sessions), but there’s no concentration of bars, busy restaurants, or intense nightlife.

Those looking for dinner at bustling restaurants, bar hopping afterward, or varied nightlife entertainment within steps of home will find that in Downtown (2 km) or Trindade (2.5 km). To get there, Beira-Mar Norte by bike takes less than 15 minutes.

Agronômica offers urban quality of life with nighttime quiet—and easy access to the action without having it at your doorstep. For the resident profile the neighborhood attracts (families, established professionals, retirees), this is an advantage, not a limitation.
