In Trindade, 18,812 residents share the neighborhood with about 70,000 people who pass through daily. They are UFSC students, University Hospital workers, university professors, and families who came to study and never left.

It is the densest neighborhood in Florianópolis’ university region. Within a walkable radius are the state’s largest federal hospital, UFSC’s main campus, 12 schools, and the Trindade Transit Integration Terminal. Few neighborhoods on the island have such concentrated infrastructure.

Where Trindade is located and how to get there

The Trindade neighborhood is located in central-north Florianópolis, between Morro da Cruz (to the west) and Itacorubi Mangrove (to the east). It borders Agronômica, Córrego Grande, Santa Mônica, Pantanal, Itacorubi, and Carvoeira.

Distances are short: Downtown is about 4.3 miles away, the airport is 6.2 miles away, and Conceição Lagoon is 6.2 miles away. The main entrance and exit road is Lauro Linhares Street, a 1.6-mile commercial corridor that runs through the neighborhood from north to south.

For those using public transportation, the landmark is the Trindade Transit Integration Terminal (TITRI), a hub that connects the neighborhood to virtually any point on the island.

The neighborhood’s history: from Azorean farm to university city

The name Trindade comes from the Parish of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity, which became a parish in 1835. Before that, the area was occupied by colonial farms owned by Azorean descendants, with an economy based on sugarcane, cassava flour, and fishing.

The turning point came in 1960, when the Federal University of Santa Catarina established its main campus in the neighborhood, occupying approximately one-third of the territory. The impact was immediate: from 1978 onward, small farms and houses gave way to apartment buildings and shopping centers.

In less than two decades, Trindade transformed from a rural neighborhood into Florianópolis’ densest university hub. Today it has the city’s largest number of students, faculty, and healthcare workers.

What remains of that past can be found at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes (built in 1913, designated a municipal heritage site in 1987) and the Holy Trinity Parish Church, on Santos Dumont Square.
